Microcystic Meningioma - Unusual Variant of Meningiomas
نویسنده
چکیده
Meningiomas are common benign tumors accounting for 13% to 18% of intracranial neoplasms. They are generally known to be solid tumors and their classical appearance on the computed tomography(CT) scan and magnetic resonance(MR) image usually lead to a correct diagnosis. Meningiomas have been subdivided into a variety of types, including meningotheliomatous, fibrous, transitional, psammomatous, angiomatous, and others. Microcystic meningioma is a rare variant of meningiomas showing microcyst formation. The incidence of cysts in association with meningiomas is between 4%~7%. In 1956, Masson described similar lesions as humid and myxomatous meningiomas and recently WHO classification of brain tumors included the microcystic meningioma as a subtype of meningiomas. The authors encountered a case of microcystic meningioma. So, we report this case with clinicopathological features. Case Report

Rare Morphological Variant of Meningioma: A Case Report of Microcystic Meningioma
A rare morphological variant of meningioma, known as microcystic meningioma, was originally described as “humid” or vacuolated meningioma. It is difficult to distinguish this clinical entity through computed tomographic scans or magnetic resonance images, as they appear similar to glial or metastatic tumor with cystic or necrotic areas. Their similar imaging characteristics make it difficult to...
متن کاملMicrocystic Variant of an Intraosseous Meningioma in the Frontal Area: A Case Report
Meningiomas located inside the bone of the calvaria belong to the group of rare types of tumours. The microcystic variant is the least common in this area. Due to their similarity to other tumours in this area, the imaging test of those tumours may constitute the source of an improper preoperative diagnosis. According to the records of the Department of Neurosurgery in Bielsko-Biała, 133 patien...
متن کاملThe role of matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase in microcystic meningiomas.
We studied the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase (TIMP) in microcystic meningiomas to investigate a possible underlying mechanism for the development of microcysts and of peritumoral edema, which are frequent characteristics of this rare subtype. Between October 1995 and June 2004, 10 of 19 patients who had histologically confirmed p...
متن کاملMicrocystic Meningioma with Late-phase Accumulation on Thallium-201 Single-photon Emission Computed Tomography: Case Report
Microcystic meningiomas are rare but benign brain tumors. Previous reports have shown that Thallium-201 single-photon emission computed tomography ((201)Tl SPECT) demonstrated a higher late-phase accumulation of (201)Tl in malignant or recurrent meningiomas than in nonaggressive meningiomas. No study has reported (201)Tl SPECT findings in microcystic meningiomas. We here describe a case of a mi...
متن کاملDifferentiation of Benign Angiomatous and Microcystic Meningiomas with Extensive Peritumoral Edema from High Grade Meningiomas with Aid of Diffusion Weighted MRI
OBJECTIVE To determine whether angiomatous and microcystic meningiomas which mimic high grade meningiomas based on extent of peritumoral edema can be reliably differentiated as low grade tumors using normalized apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values. METHODS Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of seventy patients with meningiomas was reviewed. Morphologically, the tumors were d...
